Have Your Feet Washed Regularly

It was an awkward moment. Followers of a Rabbi understood that the master is to be served. Lord Jesus however, did the most unthinkable thing when He knew His time was near. He stood up, prepare Himself, and stoops down to wash His disciple’s feet! It is like your senior pastor going to the church to clear rubbish. Or your church elder washing the toilet.

Peter immediately felt that was not suppose to be. He did not want his Lord to wash his feet. Jesus replied that Peter will have no part in Him if Peter is not washed. Peter immediately asked his head and hands to be washed as well. This was when Lord Jesus gave a profound reply. He that is cleaned needs not to be washed again but his feet.

In Jesus’ time, sandals were the common footwear. As they lived in a sandy and muddy area, cleaning of feet was a daily routine. Our Lord Jesus took the opportunity to let Peter understand that while their sins had been cleansed, daily washing is still essential for those in the faith.

Regular washing becomes a necessity and Jesus actually command His disciples to “wash each other’s feet”. Besides serving each other by water, we now cleanse each other by the word of God. (John 15:3)

May we practise washing each other’s feet regularly. May we be servants of others and ground ourselves in God’s word so that we can encourage one another to be doers of the word.
